Understanding Patterns
Don't be bamboozled by
knitting patterns! Here is a list of
basic knitting terms and abbreviations.

stitch over - Transfer the
next stitch from the left hand needle to the right hand needle by
putting point of your right hand needle from left to right, through
front of next stitch on left hand needle and slip it onto the right
hand needle. Knit the next stitch by putting the point of your
right hand needle through next stitch on the left hand needle, yarn
under and over point of right hand needle and pull yarn through. Slip
stitch off left hand needle.
The slipped stitch
and the knitted stitch should then be on the right hand needle.
Pick up the slipped
stitch with the point of your left hand needle and slip it over the
knitted stitch and off the tip of the right hand needle. |

tog |
This means together, as in K2tog means knit 2 stitches together. If
you're on a knit row, simply put the right hand needle through 2
stitches on the left and knit them as if it were one stitch. You will
end up with one stitch on the right hand needle instead of 2.
Sometimes you will be required to knit more than 2 stitches together
e.g. k3tog (knit 3 together). In this case, put your right hand
needle through 3 stitches on the left hand needle and knit all three
as it it were one stitch.
If you have to p2tog (purl 2
together) simply put your right hand needle through the stitches
purlwise and purl as if working one stitch. |

Yarn forward -
This abbreviation is usually used when the
yarn is sitting at the back of your work (when a stitch has been
KNITTED) but must be brought to the front before working the next
stitch. This is done by bringing the yard from back to front under
the right hand needle. You'll often find this abbreviation when
working lacy patterns. |

is wound around the point of the right hand needle. This makes a hole
and an extra stitch. |
