How to use eBay to save (and make) money on your knitting supplies

As we've already mentioned - we're big fans of eBay.  Why?  Because its a fantastic way to save money (and make money- which we'll go into later).  Many people still don't really understand what eBay's all about, so this page will attempt to de-mystify it.

eBay is the webs largest online auction site.  It’s not a shop, but millions of individual eBay members.  eBay is like the agent who brings the buyers and sellers together in a safe environment – to join everyone must sign up and stick to a user agreement which eBay will enforce to protect everyone.

People buy and sell items – usually at much lower cost than in stores.  Both new and used items are traded (don’t worry – they’ll always say which on the description) and millions of ordinary people like you and me use it everyday.

why are we recommending  eBay?

eBay might not seem like the obvious place to do your yarn shopping but it has a lot of advantages:

  • It has a HUGE range – almost every yarn you can think of is available on eBay.  Because it’s not just one shop, it’s a collection of thousands of sellers; you’re pretty much guaranteed to find what you’re looking for – and usually at a reduced cost to buying in stores.
  • Many of the sellers offer discounts, have reductions and carry end of line stock – so it’s perfect for picking up a bargain.
  • If you’ve only got a small project then you can really pick up a great deal – many people sell their leftover yarn and you can pick them up really cheaply.  And if you’ve got the odd ball or two leftover – you can sell em!
  • You don’t have to visit a store – great if you don’t have a decent yarn store close to home, and saves you time, gas and hassle of driving to the store, never being sure if they’ll have what you want in stock – with eBay the goods are delivered straight to your door – a real time saver.

 how much does it cost?

Nothing! Another great things about eBay is that it’s free to use if you’re buying and only costs a few cents per item if you’re selling. Click here to go to eBay and learn more.

 is it safe?

Many people worry about the security of their credit card details when buying online.  Services like eBay have done a lot of work to ensure your details are kept extremely safe.  If you pay by credit card then you have added insurance against fraud – but there are some easy precautions you can take yourself to protect yourself:

  • All ebay members are given a feedback rating based on their previous conduct when using ebay.  Check the feedback of the member you’re buying from – High rates of positive feedback suggest a reliable seller.
  • Never give out personal information or credit card details direct to the seller – unless they are verified and have a security rating.  It’s much safer to use a intermediate service like PayPal – which can be set up very easily and means that you’re credit card info is kept secure.
  • Never put your personal information into an email – all transactions are done through eBay or PayPal where there is built in security to protect you.
