how best to learn to knit?
- first, find out what kind of learner you are...
There are a number of ways to learn
and, to be honest, which one works best for you will depend on what type
of learner you are. We all learn differently and roughly fall into 1 of 3
categories:
|
If you prefer
to learn something by reading or listening to an audio book and
following instructions then you're probably an Auditory
learner. (Yes, we know reading seems like a visual thing, but
technically it's a process of hearing the words in our heads.)
if this sounds like you, there's a
brilliant ebook available called
easy knit.
Our friend Carol has just taught herself to knit through it
and thought it was great. They do a
free mini email course which gives you the basics to start you
off and try before you buy. |

If you prefer
to learn things through pictures and images - especially those with
color, diagrams and other illustrations, then you're probably a
Visual Learner.
If this appears
to be you, then try the
teach yourself visually knitting
book - it's a great resource and is available at loads of places
with some great deals
online. We
particularly like
eBay's Half.com, which has loads of great bargains, with all of
their books (included visual knitting, stitch and bitch and knitting
for dummies) at half price of less. - We're a big fan of
eBay! as
they're a great place for bargain hunting for your yarn and knitting
supplies too.
BookCloseOuts.com
is also fantastic
for picking up a bargain - they currently have tonnes of knitting
books (including teach yourself visually knitting) at half price or
less - don't you just love it when that happens? |
|
Or, are you the
kind of person who only really 'gets' something if you get stuck in
there and then - have a go and see what happens? You may be an
activist/kinesthetic learner and will do best by getting yourself
some needles and yarn and getting stuck in - possibly with a book to
help you - Great one's to start off with are Stitch and Bitch by
Debbie Stoller and Knitting for Dummies.
Even better,
join a class or knitting group. Your local yarn store should
have a list of classes and groups in your area, or have a look at
Stitchnbitch.org |
However best you learn, there are
some excellent resources and products out there to help you. Try a few
and play around - have fun and experiment. The great thing about knitting
is that any mistakes are easily rectified - just unravel and start again!
