Free Knitting Instructions - Increasing and Decreasing Once you've mastered the basics of knit and purl stitches, the next two key techniques you will need are knowing how to shape you knitting. You do this by increasing (adding stitches) and decreasing (removing stitches.) Increasing stitches involves either casting on extra stitches (usually best done at the beginning of a row) or by knitting into the front (as you normally would when knitting a stitch) and then, instead of taking the knitted stitch from the left to the right hand needle, to knit into the back of the stitch before taking the stitch onto the left hand needle. This way, you are adding another stitch. Decreasing can be done by either casting off stitches (again, best done at the beginning of a row) or by knitting more than one stitch together. To to this you put your right hand needle through 2 or more loops instead of the usual one and knit these as if they were one stitch.
