Bliss and Relaxation
The power of Plants
and Nature
Gardening, plants, flowers and wildlife all have restorative powers
and getting in touch with your inner green fingered one can have numerous well
being effects. Try these top ten tips:
|
1.
Plant some
seeds.

Even if you don't have a garden or yard space you can still find a
small space to grow something. Whether it's a window box or even a planter
on the windowsill, growing something from seed gives a huge sense of
satisfaction. Try brightly colored nasturtiums tumbling over the edge of a
container, or miniature sweet peas for their wonderful, heady scent.
Or why not try growing
some lovely organic salad leaves - many new 'cut and come again' varieties
are developed to grow quickly, be cut and used, and then the remaining plant
will grow some more leaves - a whole summer's worth of salad! Healthy,
frugal, good to the environment and the waistline - what more could you ask
for?!

2.
Create a garden.
If you've some outside space -
however small, create your own sanctuary with a garden. Whatever your
style - romantic cottage garden filled with scrambling roses, cool and
restful oriental style gardens, bold modern, or colorful child friendly,
gardens provide valuable outdoor living space and a chance to get back in
touch with nature. Nothing beats sitting out on a warm evening,
smelling honeysuckle and listening to the last birdsong.

Don't worry if you haven't got much in the way of
design flair - Have a look at

|
3.
Join a community
gardening group and make some new friends at the same time as doing some
good. Research shows that schools with green spaces have less incidents of
bullying - so why not suggest a living willow walkway, a nature patch or a
vegetable garden at your local school?

|
4.
Get some
flowers.
Why wait for someone special to do it -
nothing brightens the spirits more than some lovely blooms. They don't
have to be costly - most supermarkets stock inexpensive bouquets and if you
buy whatever is in season, it'll keep the costs down.
Or if you're feeling particularly
indulgent - send yourself a gorgeous bouquet! Try
Justflowers.com
for a great range at great prices.

Please Note: This tip is also good for making ex (or
soon to be if they don't buck their ideas up) boyfriends jealous! - Just
don't say it was us who told you! |
| 5.
Plant some bulbs.
Especially in early spring,
nothing brightens the day like the sight of spring bulbs poking through the
frosty earth. Bulbs are like magic - you plant them deep in the earth and
months later when you've all but forgotten about them, they appear as if
from nowhere, blossoming into the most luscious of blooms. Our favorite
online bulb store is
BloomingBulb.com where they have a huge range, offer great
advice and give you 10% off your first order if you sign up to their
newsletter. |
| 6.
Send someone you love some flowers!
We all know the
heady feeling of being surprised by a wonderful bouquet, whether it's for a
birthday, to say congratulations, or just to make someone's day.
1-800-FLORALS
offer a nationwide, guaranteed service
whatever the occasion. Great for that last minute doh! feeling when
you realize it's your mom's birthday tomorrow and you've not put anything in
the post (not that that's ever happened to us - honest Mom!)

7. Go Small - grow bonsai!
The
Japanese have long been aware of the calming nature of growing these
miniature trees. Whilst modern growing techniques mean that they're
now easy to care for and don't require the hours of careful pruning that was
traditionally used to produce them, they still have a magical, calming air
about them.

8. Surround yourself with plants.
House plants have been proven to remove
toxins from the air and provide valuable extra oxygen to our homes. Plus
they make the place look that bit more welcoming. Visit your local
nursery and have a look around, sniff a few, ask lots of questions (make
sure you get plants that are suitable for your situation, will get the right
amount of light and won't require too much care and attention.)
DirectGardening.com have some great deals on
plants for inside and outside your home. Check out their regular 1¢
sale.

9.
Go outdoors.
Get
yourself some valuable vitamin D and instantly improve your health. Getting
outdoors for some fresh air is a vital part of staying healthy - and the
greener your surroundings the better. Live in a city? Then find a park,
take a day trip to the woods, the beach - whatever is local to you. So
often we get tied up in our day to day stresses and strains that we forget
to stop and appreciate what's around us. Go explore - discover the green
around you!
