Knitting Tips - More Tips For Caring for Caring for your Knitting Yarn

Follow our fabulous yarn tips for keeping your yarn in tip top condition:

1.  Don't put knitted garments in the washing machine. Most natural fibers won't respond well to the heat and agitation of a washer - in fact, wool garments will more than likely shrink and 'felt' - the fibers mesh together forming a thick, dense fabric. Believe me - this is NOT what you want to happen with your slaved over new jumper! Hand washing is the way to go and there are lots of gentle hand wash detergents on the market that will help care for your knitting.

2. When hand washing be careful not to use water that is too hot. It's perfectly possible to felt woolen garments by hand and you'd be surprised at how low the temperature needs to be for that to happen. Remember to keep it hand hot - that is, water that is comfortable for you to have your hands in without needing rubber gloves. As an extra precaution be careful not to rub the pieces of your garment together as this can damage the fibers.

3. Another tip for hand washing your woolen or silk garments is to add a few drops of white vinegar to the final rinse. It will remove any remaining soap residue and brighten the yarn's colors.

4. Most yarns are spun to be worked with one way - to ensure that the fibers all fall the same way and the threads will lie flat. To make sure that you work the yarn in the right direction pull it from the centre of the ball - this way you'll avoid having a rough finish that will be more prone to snagging and knotting.

5. Mohair yarn can be tricky to work. To ensure a good finish when using mohair - brush the yarn with a soft brush to make it extra fluffy.
